Welcome to the end of 2023! And what a year it has been. The HSC is now complete with results and UAC applications set to be sent out on 14th December. We wish all of our HSC ‘23 cohort the best of luck. You’ve all worked incredibly hard so we can’t wait to see you all again in early January for a get-together dinner. Come hungry!

Our current students have been hard at work as well. Congratulations to Antheon Gabila (9) and Qy Truong (9) for getting an A in their latest assessment tasks. Well done as well to Nikki (10), Elaine (10) for their Band 6 results in their essays and Deniz (10) for her A grade in her creative writing task. We must also commend Sally (10) for achieving the highest grade in her essay and Winson (12) for coming 3rd in his cohort. While incredibly impressive, these marks are no surprise to us considering our students work incredibly hard for their results, whatever those results are.

However, what will be new to us is a new staff member coming Term 1 of 2024. For the first time since opening our doors in January of 2020, we are now proud to announce that we are hiring! We are in the middle of screening new candidates to work at Foci Education as a junior education specialist and cannot wait to introduce them to all our existing students and their families — this will also mean that more available slots are coming in the new year so stay tuned for news and updates by following our socials, particularly our Instagram account. If you know anyone who is interested in this position and would be a great fit for Foci, please let us know who they are and we’d love to have a chat with them. 'Tis the season to be jolly and wrap up another fantastic school term! Thank you to our students for working hard and their parents and carers for endlessly supporting them. David has been working with students in English since 2015. He majored in English Literature at Western Sydney University, where he graduated in 2018, also as an alumnus of The Academy, the university’s selective programme for high-achieving students — with sub-majors in Sociology, Linguistics, and Education.

His teaching background is deliberately broad. He has worked with students from the diverse learning unit at Sir Joseph Banks High School, international EAL/D students at Chester Hill IEC, and refugee students through the Inclusions Program at Arthur Phillip High School — students who arrived at English from entirely different starting points, different languages, different schooling systems, different relationships with written expression. When a student cannot articulate what they mean, David knows precisely where the difficulty lives. That is not a skill most English tutors have.

He founded Foci Education in 2019 with a clear position: English teaching, done with the rigour it deserves, in an institution built around nothing else.

Outside the classroom, David goes on cafe runs and makes solo dinner reservations.

He considers both a form of research.
