A program that matches our pace

Private and group sessions for Years K–12, based in Burwood.

Senior High School

The HSC and IB have their prescriptions. We know them well. But a student who arrives at Year 12 through the Foci curriculum arrives differently.

They have been writing analytically since Year 7. They have read Shakespeare twice — once for romance, once for tragedy. They have encountered post-colonial theory, feminist criticism, and Marxist readings of media before most of their peers have heard the terms. They write with a voice that is genuinely their own, because we have spent years helping them find it.

We do not just teach the essay template. We do not just teach tricks. We teach the thinking that makes every task — every module, every text, every unseen — more answerable. The mark band is the outcome. The thinking is the work.

Our senior classes are small. The approach is direct: close reading, sustained argument, and writing under conditions that match or exceed what schools and examining bodies expect.

Junior High School

The secondary program is where the architecture becomes visible. Five foundations organise everything — and students return to each one every year, at increasing depth.

  • Discursive writing

  • Creative writing

  • Contemporary Australian Voices

  • Advertising & Journalism

  • Cosmopolitan Voices

Year 7 begins with language and identity. Year 8 moves into visual literacy and Bong Joon Ho. Year 9: Shakespeare, poetry, Asian-Australian literature. Year 10: journalism, tragedy, and critical theory. By the time a student reaches Year 11, the grammar of serious thinking is already in place.

The Unit List

Primary School

Our primary program begins in Kindergarten. It is not preparation for tutoring. It is the first layer of a ten-year curriculum, designed to produce students who read widely, write with confidence, and think before they speak.

Four themes run across every year of primary: Family and Friends, Worlds Around Me, Australian Values, and Imaginary Worlds. Each stage returns to these themes through more complex texts and harder questions. Alongside them, the curriculum teaches the mechanics explicitly — phonics and grammar in Stage 1, reading and parts of speech in Stage 2, sentence construction and opinion in Stage 3.

The Unit List

The curriculum was not designed to match the schools. It was designed to lead them.

Every unit. Every year. Every student.

The Unit List?

Our group classes run with 3–6 students per session, allowing for genuine discussion while keeping the teaching specific. Every class follows the Foci curriculum — built around the current syllabus, updated each year, and taught by a specialist tutor.

All prices are in AUD and are calculated per student on a quarterly basis. Prices are prepaid for 10 lessons (1 lesson per week during the school term). K-6 lessons last 60 mins. 7-12 lessons last 90 mins.
